January 7

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico

Six years after becoming bishop of Guadalajara, Fray Antonio Alcalde founded the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Its first stone was laid January 7, 1777; four years later, on January 7, 1781, the completed shrine was consecrated. In the neighborhood that grew up quickly around the sanctuary, now one of the main districts of the city, a great fiesta is celebrated each year on December 12, the day the Virgin appeared to St. Juan Diego in 1531 and left her image on his cloak, preserved in her Basilica near Mexico City.
