Unserer Lieben Frau zur Alten Kapelle, Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany

On February 14, 1014, Pope Benedict VIII crowned the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II and gave him an icon said to have been painted by St. Luke. On June 21 of that year, Henry donated the image to the Collegiate Church (Stiftskirche) of Regensburg in his native Bavaria. In 1147, Pope Clement II declared Henry II a saint, the only German king so honored. Destroyed by fire, the icon was replaced in 1330 with the present image venerated in the Old Chapel (Alte Kapelle), the imperial church, renovated in rococo style in 1747. Our Lady of the Old Chapel is a dexiokratousa icon, similar to the hodegetria or way-pointing type, but with the child on his mother's right instead of her left.
