Monday before Easter

Virgen de la Soledad, Murcia, Murcia, Spain

In 1943, a woman of Murcia ordered a statue of the grieving Virgin from the sculptor José Sánchez Lozano. She placed it in her private chapel, but lent it every year to the Confraternity of the Most Holy Christ of Pardon for their procession on Monday of Holy Week. In 2008, her grandchildren of the Albacete López Mesas family gave the statue to the parish church of San Antolín. A black-clad subconfraternity, the Sisterhood of the Virgin of Grief, marches with the Virgen de la Soledad at the end of the procession.
