marian anniversaries      july

Last Saturday in July

Notre Dame du Très-Haut, Saint-Dalmas-le-Selvage, Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Up above treeline, on the Bonette-Restefond pass in the French Alps, Our Lady of the Very High presides over a world of marmots and rock. During World War II, villagers fleeing the area stopped at her shrine to pray for the safety of the homes they were leaving. Those whose prayers were answered erected a commemorative marker here in 1963. During the annual pilgrimage on the last Saturday in July, some 300 participants walk up the barren pass, accompanied by priests, musicians, and statues of the Virgin from adjoining areas.
