January 7Nuestra Seņora de Guadalupe, Guadalajara, Jalisco, MexicoSix years after becoming bishop of Guadalajara, Fray Antonio Alcalde founded the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in what was then a sparsely populated area on the north side of town. Its first stone was laid January 7, 1777; four years later, on January 7, 1781, the completed church was consecrated. In addition to funding construction himself, Bishop Alcalde built low-rent housing for the poor in the shrine's neighborhood, which grew quickly and is now one of the main districts of the city. It hosts a great fiesta each year on December 12, the day the Virgin appeared to St. Juan Diego in 1531 and left her image on his cloak, preserved in her Basilica near Mexico City. Sources:
