March 23Virgen de la Piedad, Cartagena, Murcia, SpainThe Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus from Nazareth, the oldest confraternity in Cartagena, goes back to the 1600s. It is known as the Cofradía Marraja because it got the proceeds of any mako sharks (marrajas) sold in the fish market. Long responsible for many of the holy week processions in Cartagena, in 1906 the Brotherhood incorporated the Virgen de la Piedad, or Pietà, into their pagentry, and in 1925 hired Valencian sculptor José Capuz to create an image. The following year, the the Agrupación Santísima Virgen de la Piedad was formed as a subconfraternity of the Marrajos. The Pietà figures in the Procession of Promises on Monday of Passion Week and in the Good Friday procession with the statue of Cristo Nazareno. It was crowned noncanonically on March 23, 1964.
