Easter Monday
Notre-Dame de Vie, Venasque, Carpentras, Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte
d'Azur, France
In the 500s, with Rome and its provinces suffering decline
and barbarian threat, Siffrein, Bishop of Carpentras in southern France,
retreated to the hills of Venasque, where he built two churches and a
baptistery and, in the valley, a chapel dedicated to the Mother of Life.
This soon became a place of pilgrimage, particularly known for
resuscitations of babies who died unbaptised. In the 1600s, the Minims, of
the Order of St. Francis, settled there to manage the shrine and host its
pilgrims. They built the present building complex and sanctuary. A century
later, the Revolutionary government sold the buildings as a public asset
to private owners. In 1920, a third-order Carmelite, Mme. Lemaire, bought
the property, and in 1932, Father Marie-Eugène de l'Enfant-Jésus, OCD,
started the Institute of Our Lady of Life there—a Carmelite Secular Institute for
laypeople and priests, who take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience
while remaining active in their workplaces and parishes. In 1957, Father
Marie-Eugène established Easter Monday—the day after Christians celebrate her
son Jesus' return to life and promise of life eternal—as the Feast of Our Lady of Life.
