Unserer Lieben Frau im Nussbaum, Höchstberg, Gundelsheim, Baden-Württemberg,
Germany
When the Catholics of Höchstberg village were planning to
build a church, a shepherd reported that Mary appeared in a walnut
tree near a rural chapel and told him
she wanted the new church there, rather than in town. Disbelieving
the old man, the townspeople proceeded to prepare the site in the village
and brought in stone and wood for building. But after those heavy building
materials moved from town to country three nights running—mysteriously, despite
guards—people decided that the shepherd was right, and agreed to build
the village church where Our Lady wanted it. Heaven's
will seemed to be confirmed the day in 1698 when for 15 minutes residents
watched twelve luminous beings process to to the old chapel near the
walnut tree. The
new church incorporating the chapel was consecrated on May 16, 1700. On
Easter Monday, April 2, 1945, it burned down under
American artillery fire. Rebuilt after the war, Our Lady of the Walnut remains a parish church
and pilgrimage sanctuary. The main pilgrimage days are July 2, formerly
the Feast of the Visitation, and the Friday following the public holiday
of Ascension Thursday.
