Our Lady of the Fjords, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada
On the feast of St. John Baptist, June 24, 1497, John Cabot
"discovered" Newfoundland. In its major city, St. John's, the Catholic
basilica is dedicated to John the Baptist. There, on June 23, 1905, the first
Archbishop of Newfoundland, a St. John's native, was installed. The next day, an
immense iceberg floated into the narrows off St. John's harbor, bearing a
snow-white image of the Madonna hundreds of feet high. It sailed slowly down the
coast, escorted by a growing flotilla of boats, to the amazement of crowds on
shore. Equally amazing, to people who had never seen a camera, was T.B.
Hayward's photograph of the iceberg. The new
Archbishop wrote a sonnet to "Our Lady of the
Fjords."
