Our Lady of Zarvanytsia, Zarvanytsia,
Berezhany, Ternopil, Ukraine
In the 1200s, a monk fleeing the Mongol
invasion of Kiev stopped along the banks of the Stryi River in western
Ukraine, at Zarvanytsia. After dreaming of the Mother of God, he awoke to
a bright light that led him to an icon of her with the holy Child. He
stayed there, building a chapel for the icon and then a monastery, which
soon gathered many pilgrims and many reports of miraculous healings before
the Virgin's image. During the Soviet occupation, the icon was hidden. But
from August 28, 1957 to August 28, 1958 (Feast of the
Dormition), pilgrims
saw a mysterious supernatural light at the site, like a silver net, and an
apparition of the crowned Mother and Child. On September 26, 1962, eight
girls saw the Virgin holding a candle there. In 1997, a new Ukrainian
Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Mother of God of Zarvanytsia was begun.
Blessed on July 22, 2000, the church is a magnet for pilgrims from May to
October.
