August 25
Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Paysandú, Uruguay
On August 25, 1860, the cornerstone was laid of a new building to
replace the little thatched parish church of St. Benedict the Moor in
Paysandú, a growing settlement in western Uruguay on the Argentine
border. In 1864, when almost completed, the new church was destroyed by
Brazilian cannon fire during a regional conflict. Rebuilt in the 1870s,
the neoclassical building was dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary along
with St. Benedict the Moor. In 1882, fire destroyed the main altar and the
statue of the Virgin of the Rosary. The present statue was blessed on
May 25, 1886. In 1898, Italian artist Antonio Buscaglia decorated the
interior with paintings in fresco and tempera. Their magnificence
contributed to Pope Pius XII's 1949 designation of the church as a
Basilica Minor. Somewhat deteriorated after over a century, the historic
Basilica underwent restoration in 2012.
