Fishermen and mariners of coastal Portugal have long called on Our Lady for help at sea. Near the village of Armação de Pêra, their ex votos line the walls of the shrine of Our Lady of the Rock, established in the 1500s atop a sea cliff. Around the same time, during the age of exploration, devotion to the Virgin under the title Our Lady of Navigators became popular in the region and was carried by Portuguese seamen to Brazil. In 1960, a new parish church was dedicated to Our Lady of the Navigators in Armação de Pêra, now a beach resort, where her festa has become a summer attraction culminating on the second Sunday in August. On the preceding and subsequent evenings there are shows and games. On Sunday, Solemn Mass takes place at 6:00 pm, followed by a procession. Traditionally, members of the Fishermen's Association would carry the Virgin's statue from the parish church to the beach and place it in one of many decorated boats that would travel together along the seacoast, stopping along the way for prayers and hymn singing at Our Lady of the Rock or other beaches, and then returning to the church by land. Fireworks would conclude the festivities. In some recent years, the festal mass has been followed instead by a land procession, blessing of the sea and boats, and entertainment.
