Bunda Maria Di Atas Perahu, Pulau Galang, Lubuk Baja, Riau, Indonesia

From 1979 to 1996, Galang Island in southeastern Indonesia was the site of a camp for Vietnamese refugees, many of them Catholic. After the refugees' resettlement in other countries, some shrines to Mary remained, among them this one to St. Mary of the Boat People dedicated September 30, 1994. On the statue's pedestal a Vietnamese prayer and English translation reads, "O Mary, we are all deeply grateful for your protecting presence on our way to freedom. We always entrust our lives to you. Your care for us will be highly appreciated in our heart forever."
